What the certification covers
- ✓ Indoor contaminants and their potential health effects — the science behind an indoor air quality complaint
- ✓ Building science: how design, construction, materials and furnishings shape the indoor environment
- ✓ HVAC systems — their role in indoor air quality and how they are diagnostically assessed
- ✓ Instrumentation and sampling — taking the right measurements and interpreting the data correctly
- ✓ Guidelines, regulations and standards governing indoor environmental quality
- ✓ Remediation oversight — scoping, worker protection, documentation and post-works verification
Why it matters
A CIEC is certified on demonstrated field experience and an independent 120-question examination — broad industry knowledge, not attendance at a course — and must earn the unanimous approval of the ACAC certification board, recertify every two years and complete 20 hours of professional development a year. ACAC’s indoor environmental certifications are the only ones in the field accredited by the Council for Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB). For a client, that means the person diagnosing the problem is independently qualified to do it: the investigation defines the scope of works, the works are verified against it, and the cause is addressed rather than the symptom.
